Flood in Sikkim- Five Dead, 22 soldiers are missing

A serious flood has killed the India’s state of Sikkim. As per the media report the death toll has increased to five and 42 were missing including 22 army officers from Wednesday. Heavy rainfall has outburst many lakes including Lohanak Lake in north Sikkim resulting in a flood Teesta River Basin.
According to the IMD reports the northeastern state received a rainfall of 40.9mm between Tuesday to Wednesday, Which is the all-time high of the year. IMD also warned of heavy rainfall and Landslides in many parts of Sikkim in the last two days. All the flights to Sikkim have been cancelled.


Also, the army’s eastern command said due to the sudden increase in water level in the Chungthang dam has created a worse situation after releasing the water. This led to Army vehicles parked at Bardang near Singtam getting affected. 23 personnel have been reported missing and some vehicles are reported submerged under the slush. Search operations are underway,” said an Army officer to the news agency.


The Heavy Flood has destroyed 11 bridges in Sikkim 8 in the Mangan District, 2 in Nimachi and one in Gangtok. Water pipeline, Gas line, Sewage line, 277 Kacha and Concrete houses were destroyed. The search operation is still continuing in various districts.
The Calamity has affected more than 10,000 people in Mangan, 7000 in pakyong, 3000 in Namchi, and 3000 in Gangtok.
